Pleural mesothelioma, which is the most common form of this disease, affects the lining of the lungs. Pleural mesothelioma is focused on the thin layer of cells that line the lungs, known as the mesothelium. When mesothelioma strikes, the cells in these lining tissues divide at an abnormally fast rate, causing scar tissue and tumors to build up and stiffen them, thus limiting lung function. In cases of peritoneal mesothelioma, the cells in the peritoneum, the lining that holds the abdominal organs in place, are affected. When a patient has pericardial (around the heart) mesothelioma, his or her heart function is limited by the stiffening of the cells that surround it.
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that has been prized for centuries for its heat resistance, durability, and chemical inertness. Asbestos can be found all over the world, and is most commonly used for textile and construction purposes. Asbestos exposure is the cause of mesothelioma cancer.
Just as the benefits of asbestos have been known since the days of ancient Egypt, so have the dangers of this mineral been acknowledged. Miniscule asbestos fibers can be inhaled or swallowed, which can cause such diseases as lung cancer, asbestosis, and mesothelioma. Despite the known dangers associated with asbestos, which were scientifically documented in the early 1900s, the mineral has continued to be mined, manufactured, and distributed. More than 80% of mesothelioma patients came into contact with asbestos on the job, where business owners were aware of the dangers of asbestos but failed to warn their workers. Because of this, in many cases those negligent business owners can be held financially responsible for the treatment and care of mesothelioma patients who contracted the cancer after working on their job sites.
Florida has the second highest rate of mesothelioma deaths in the United States after California, though no asbestos occurs naturally in any part of the state. Instead, asbestos was shipped to Florida, mostly from a mine in Libby, Montana. More than 100,000 tons of asbestos were shipped to Tampa, Florida alone before 1991.
There are many jobsites in Florida where asbestos exposure was a risk for workers. A number of chemical and power plants were constructed with asbestos insulation because of its high level of heat resistance. NASA also used asbestos in more than one application at its testing and launching bases on the South Coast. Perhaps the most common source of asbestos exposure in Florida, however, is found with shipyard workers and sailors. Tragically, most or all of the U.S. Navy ships built between the 1940s and the 1970s were constructed with asbestos insulation, pipe lining, and other components. Florida is home to a number of Navy bases, and Navy veterans in Florida have a high rate of mesothelioma cancer.
