Radiation for Mesothelioma

Radiation as a follow up therapy to surgery is part of the recommended tri-modality treatment for mesothelioma, and can be used to alleviate symptoms of the disease. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network Guidelines for the treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma recommends radiation for all patients who have undergone surgical removal of the tumor because radiation for mesothelioma is the only way to eliminate disease left behind after surgery.

Radiation for Mesothelioma Shown to Reduce Recurrence Rates

After extrapleural pneumonectomy, most patients have a recurrence of the disease in the side of the chest where the mesothelioma originated. However, studies have shown that radiation for mesothelioma performed after surgery reduces the rate of relapse.

In one study, 100 patients underwent extrapleural pneumonectomies, 63 of whom received radiation for mesothelioma about two and a half months after surgery. Twenty percent of these patients survived for three years, and the average overall survival was 14.2 months. Distant recurrences of the disease occurred in 33 patients. Eight patients had a recurrence either in the area around the original site, or in the region of the original site. Five of the eight also had a recurrence in a distant site. Only 3 patients had a recurrence within the area that had been irradiated.
